Got Breast Milk?

by Amy Spangler
November 04, 2007

Did you know that humans are the only mammal that feed the milk of another mammal to its young?

What Would Mammals Do? is the first in a series of interactive webinars offered by Conscious Woman, an online resource for issues related to women’s health and the environment.

Presenter, Diane Wiessinger, an animal behaviorist, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and La Leche League Leader (LLL), will discuss breastfeeding and mothering lessons that can be gleaned from other mammals.

What Would Mammals Do? is a fascinating journey with our mammalian counterparts through labor, birth, lactation, and beyond. Through a series of amazing photographs and videos, participants will discover for themselves the implications mammalian ancestry has for the way humans give birth and begin the process of mothering in modern America.

  • What happens when other mammal mothers are deprived of their chosen place, time, and sensations of birth?
  • What if the resulting birth is too hard… or too easy?
  • To what extent might this information shed light on our own mothering experiences?
